AppletViewer doesn't enforce the "sandbox" rules if I recall correctly, but the VM running in the browser will. Or maybe your applet is doing something it is not allowed to do. It's a common mistake people assume that just because they have a particular version of the JDK/JRE, that the browser is auto-magically configured to use it. Check what version of the VM the browser is using.
